Colonial Country Club is a thirty-six hole facility and one of the finest in this area. The deep history surrounding both courses hits you the moment you step foot on the grounds. Both courses offer uniquely different golf challenges.
The North Course is a par 71 measuring 6646 yards from the back tees. A variety of golf shots are required from tee to green on the North Course. With tree lined, Zoysia fairways and bent grass greens, the North Course is a pleasure to play, but remains challenging for golfers of every skill level.
The South Course, commonly identified as “the South,” needs no introduction. Site of the 1977 famous 59, shot by Al Geiberger, the South has been dubbed by Golf Week Magazine as one of the toughest tests (no longer played) on the PGA Tour. Curtis Strange said, “That course was one of the 3, 4, 5 courses I would have bet you would have never seen a 59 on". Continuing in its historic tradition, the South will play host to the 2009 Southern Amateur Golf Championship, newly ranked among the world’s top ten amateur events. President of the Southern Golf Association and central figure in its return to Colonial is businessman and member of Colonial Larry Walker. The Southern’s rich tradition now attracts an international field. A par 72 measuring 7334 from the back tees, the South is without question one of the most challenging courses to play in the country and one of the most enjoyable. With tree lined fairways, gorgeous lakes, and uncharacteristic elevation changes to the region, the South Course is truly a gem to behold.
All that Colonial is, was, and will be can be summed in the following quote by T. Alan Armstrong, “Champions do not become champions when they win [an] event, but in the hours, weeks, months, and years they spend preparing for it.” Colonial, as a championship facility, knows no limits when it comes to preparation and the result, championship performance.
