Golf Course News:
By Director Grounds Maintenance, Doug Estes:
I would definitely say this was a good year with a lot of learning involved. We managed our way through a hot and dry summer. The dryness did help us in one aspect of the golf course and that was our greens. The drought hurt keeping our color to both courses. I myself have learned there are areas to address that would not only help our maintenance but also help beautify our courses. We are currently making a project list for the next few years and will be prioritizing this list. Our plans are to keep the membership more informed on daily, weekly, and monthly projects. My staff and I have great respect for our courses. We take great pride in Colonial and look forward to improving certain areas of the golf courses. Some of the new changes that occurred this year are for the health of the courses. I know that it comes with some inconvenience. Our facilities are second to none. The regional USGA Agronomist stated on his visit we have a US OPEN layout with the South Course. That is a powerful statement when you look at the history of golf and the venues that have hosted an OPEN. That being said, we have work to continue on to help beautify and improve our course for our membership. The past few months we have been busy with removal of the damage greens barrier, removal of Bermuda grass encroachment, mulching & blowing leaves, fescue seeding, drainage #14 SC, winter annual planting, landscaping, & repairs of lightning protection in trees. The winter months provide great timing for projects. Here is a list of a few things we will be working on this winter: Limbing trees, edging cart paths, drainage work, South Course bunker work, dormant sodding, maintenance shop cleanup, new fan removal & paint, & overall course cleanup. Our goal is to return character and definition for 2007. We intend to make more noticeable improvements and improve playability this season. My staff and I would like to thank the membership and look forward to this year.
